Bonnie Mohler receives 2010 Judy Tassler Crystal Heart Award

The 5th annual Go Red for Women luncheon was held at the Henry County Hospital Heller Community Room on Thursday, May 27. The goal of the luncheon was raise awareness to the threat of heart disease to women and to create a call to action for all women to commit to living a heart-healthy lifestyle. Nationwide, more than one in three female adults has cardiovascular disease.

Members of the community were encouraged to nominate a friend or family member for the Judy Tassler Crystal Heart Award. The Judy Tassler Crystal Heart Award is sponsored by the Tom Tassler family in honor of their wife and mother, Judy, who died unexpectedly of heart disease. Nominations were for people who have made successful lifestyle changes in addressing heart disease. Bonnie Mohler of Liberty Center, Ohio was the recipient of the Judy Tassler Crystal Heart award for 2010.

In March 2002, Bonnie Mohler came to Henry County Hospital with excruciating ear pain that had been going on for two weeks. She was diagnosed with an angina attack and transferred to Toledo Hospital where she had a heart catheterization, angioplasty, and stent placement. Bonnie has overcome heart disease by making healthy lifestyle choices. She exercises regularly by riding a stationary bicycle and walking outside on the community track when the weather is good. She walks up and down her basement steps as a form of exercise and participates in the Tai Chi fitness class sponsored by Henry County Hospital and the Senior Center. Bonnie enjoys playing games on Wii, particularly bowling and the balance/stretching/and strengthen exercises.

Bonnie stays active and is involved in various community events as a volunteer. She is the volunteer coordinator for the Liberty Center Senior Center satellite program. She is also active in her church and has been for many years. Bonnie’s family is very important to her. One of her family pastimes is helping with the care of her 2 great grandchildren. Bonnie said, “There is no exercise as good as caring for a 5 year old and a 2 1/2 year old!” Other changes Bonnie has made to help her live a stronger, healthier life include attention to her eating habits. She now incorporates organic foods into her diet. She has switched to healthier fats such as olive oil and canola oil. She minimizes the use of processed foods and enjoys freezing and canning fresh fruits and vegetables from her garden.
