Stroke can strike suddenly, and without fast intervention can lead to potentially
profound disability. The American Stroke Association says it is the number
one cause of disability in this country and the number four cause of death.
Henry County Hospital is now part of The University of Toledo Medical Center
Stroke Network. The Stroke Network is a collaborative link of hospitals
connected to a central hub hospital, UTMC, with expertise in all aspects
of stroke management. Using high-quality teleconferencing equipment, members
of the UTMC Stroke Team are able to work in tandem with Henry County Hospital's
Emergency Care Services physicians. Using this network, UTMC's Stroke
Team can perform a virtual examination on a stroke patient, view radiological
studies, talk with family members and develop a state-of-the-art treatment
plan. This network allows stroke patients to receive some of the best
care in the region when time is of the essence without having to be transferred
to the University of Toledo Medical Center. The patient can be assessed
quickly if rapid and direct intervention is required.
"I am extremely excited about Henry County Hospital's new partnership
with UTMC's Stroke Network," commented Kim Bordenkircher, chief
executive officer at Henry County Hospital. "The launch of the Telestroke
program brings healthcare benefits of a large city to rural Henry County.
When diagnosing a stroke every minute matters, now residents of Henry
County and the surrounding rural communities can receive high quality
stroke care without delay."
The network is designed to expand patient access to university-quality
care. Henry County Hospital's partnership with the Stroke Network
will now give patients 24/7 access to UTMC Stroke Network consultations.
Dr. Mouhammad Jumaa and Dr. Syed Zaidi, vascular and interventional neurologists
who trained at the University of Pittsburgh, have joined the UT faculty
to direct the UTMC Stroke Network and Neuro-interventional Services.
In 2005, UTMC became one of the first hospitals in Ohio to be accredited
as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission. UTMC has participated
in more than 30 stroke research protocols and has four neurologists board-certified
in vascular neurology. The chair of neurology and vascular neurology,
Dr. Gretchen Tietjen, received the Stroke Innovation Award in 2009 from
the American Heart Association and has provided leadership for the Stroke
Center for more than 16 years. Together UTMC Stroke Center and Henry County
Hospital are committed to providing excellent stroke care to the residents
of Henry County and the surrounding areas.
