Swim Safety Tips

Staying Safe While You Swim

Summer fun means spending time at the pool, but that can also mean water-related injuries. With more than 3,500 fatal accidental drownings each year., it’s essential to do everything you can to prevent water-related accidents when spending time in or by water. Henry County Health is here to share some helpful tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy all summer long.

Supervise Children & Teens

Accidental drownings are the second leading cause of death for children and teens between the age of 1 and 14, making it imperative for adults to be present and alert when spending time doing water-related activities.

Whether you’re at the pool, beach, or lake—make sure you are paying close attention to the children around you at all times. You should also be close enough to reach your children, even when a lifeguard is present.

Don’t Drink Alcohol and Swim

Although many people drink when spending time by the water during the summer months, this can cause fatal accidents. In fact, about 70% of accidental drownings involve alcohol consumption. This is because alcohol can cause a loss of coordination and critical thinking skills, which are only intensified by the summer heat.

Stay Hydrated

When spending time in the water, it’s important to remember to drink water too! When swimming, you exert a lot of energy—if you aren’t properly hydrated, it leaves you at an increased risk of experiencing heat exhaustion. It is advised that most adults drink between 11 and 16 cups of water each day, which may need to be increased when spending time outdoors during hotter temperatures.
